    Dr. Mahadevia, MD-ABSM

    Dr. Akshay Mahadevia is one of the premier physicians in his field, practicing pulmonary and sleep medicine in the Quad Cities since 1983. He is board certified in Internal Medicine, Pulmonary Medicine, and sleep disorders Dr. Mahadevia came to the U.S. in 1979. He completed his U.S. training at St. Joseph's Hospital (Chicago, IL) and went on to do his residency and fellowship at the University of Illinois (Chicago, Illinois). He is Board Certified by the American Board of Sleep Medicine in Sleep Medicine. 

    Dr. Mahadevia has 25 years of experience in the field of sleep medicine. He has authored publications in many reputable medical journals, including the American Review of Respiratory Diseases, related to positive pressure therapy in sleep apnea.  Dr. Mahadevia’s study, “Effects of Expiratory Positive Pressure in Sleep Apnea” led to the invention of ProVent therapy for OSA.  

    ​In addition, he is currently involved in clinical trials related to the treatment of sleep apnea and a pilot study related to sleep health and wellness.  He is an active member of the American Thoracic Society, American College of Chest Physicians and American Academy of Sleep Medicine​.

    Dr. Janis Smith, Ph.D.

    Dr. Janis Smith is a licensed psychologist who joined Mahadevia Sleep Consultants in 2017.  She received her Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from the University of Georgia and completed a postdoctoral fellowship in anxiety disorders at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine. 

     

    Dr. Smith has over 25 years of clinical experience, having worked in a variety of hospital and clinic settings.  Much of her clinical work has involved utilizing cognitive behavioral strategies to help individuals as they face the stress of medical and rehabilitative recovery.  Most recently she provided inpatient consultation at Genesis Medical Center.

     

    In recent years Dr. Smith has acquired additional training and experience in behavioral sleep medicine, and in particular, with Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia (CBT-I).  The American College of Physicians recommends CBT-I as the first line treatment for chronic insomnia.  For several years Dr. Smith has worked with patients in the Genesis Sleep Disorders and Neurodiagnostic Center helping patients address the behavioral, cognitive, and environmental factors that promote optimal sleep. 

     

    Dr. Smith has provided numerous presentations to professional organizations and community groups about insomnia and health psychology topics.  She is an active member of the Society of Behavioral Sleep Medicine, the Association of Behavioral and Cognitive Therapies, and the American Psychological Association.
